Vauxhall are about to increase their share of the small car segment with the introduction of the all new Viva. Due for release in the UK by next summer, the latest model in the Vauxhall line up will make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, in March next year.

Starting price for this nippy little city car will be from £7,500, which will place the Viva – meaning ‘long live’ in Latin – in direct competition with the likes of the Hyundai i10 and the Dacia Sandero. The Viva will also come in at a lower retail price than its stablemate, the Corsa.

 

Competitive pricing is important in all segments of the car market, but competition is at its fiercest in the city car, run-around sector. Not only do we want our small cars to be cheap, we also expect them to be fuel-efficient and offer as much versatility as possible. The Viva, which will be sold as the Opel Karl in all other countries, will have to fight for its place in the budget range, so is it up to the challenge?

Vauxhall are still to publish the full spec of the Viva, but official pictures show that the five door model is nice and compact, with no fussy styling or quirky features. The new model will have a similarly rounded design at the front end to the three door Adam and the Corsa, although the Viva will have a distinct central grille and a set of low mounted fog lights.

One notable difference is at the back where the Viva will sport new rear light clusters and a square back window. Customers will have the choice of 1.2-litre, 1.4-litre, and a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine sizes, the last of which is available in the Adam and new Corsa models as well. The 3.68 metre long Viva is firmly intended to be the brand’s new entry level model in what is already a strong portfolio of small cars. That said, Vauxhall has confirmed that they are considering producing another small car in the near future, a compact crossover, which could possibly replace the current Meriva MPV.

With worldwide appetite for small, economical cars set to go on growing, manufacturers have to constantly innovate and come up with cars that are lighter, cheaper, greener, more fuel efficient, and hassle free. Some nice design touches and a bit of style never goes amiss either. For a small car, the Viva has a lot to live up to!
